Career is much larger and significant part of our lives today and any decision in terms of career planning now has to be taken with utmost attention. With numerous courses, certifications, job opportunities available, choosing the right career path could be intimidating for students. An adequate choice of career will not only offer an effective job opportunity but allows a student to embrace a satisfactory and respectful lifestyle also. The desired career path engages an individual making them well informed, confident and dedicated.
The session began with a discussion about the future plans of the students. In this, the students shared what they have planned for their career, and what is the basis of their decisions. While most of them had answers ready like, engineer, doctor, pilot, UPSC examination, there were few who were still in the state of confusion. The students were guided that the decision they make regarding their career choices should be based on two important factors, their aptitude and areas of interest areas. The aptitude can be judged by their performance in some subjects and how easily they get the concepts, while the interests areas can be found out by increasing their horizon and exposure levels. As the subject selection should not be done thinking of spending 5-7 years studying the subject, but also working in the same field for the next 30 to 40 years of our lives. The students were also explained that why their choices should not only be influenced by the options selected by their fellow classmates and their friend circle. They were also given tips on how they can research more about the career fields they are potentially interested in. The students who were not clear about the choice of careers, were given additional time in one to one session, to encourage them to think in right direction. It was a nice session, and the students asked many questions related to different career paths.
